2017 National Rally
Fun, Food and Friends!
By Debbie and Dave Blaser
Hi there! Debbie and I are not new to RVing, but we are new to being part of an RV club, so when we read about the National Rally in Canadian RVing, we thought would give it a try to meet other members and socialize with some folks who share some of the same interests that we do – like getting away from the rigours of the day-to-day, and enjoying some time outdoors relaxing by a campfire.
Off I went to work one day in February, a copy of the magazine in hand so I could make a copy, fill out and fax in the registration form, followed by a quick call to make sure that our registration was received. Then the waiting game began.
Along comes June, and off we go to Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, wondering about who we’ll meet, and about the weekend ahead of us. This was our first National Rally, and Debbie and I had plenty of time to talk about what we expected, and the fun we were looking forward to.
To be honest, we were a little worried about a possible age difference between us and others at the rally. My wife and I are in our early 40s, and we’d heard that most of the people who attended the rally were a bit older than us, and we very much were hoping to be accepted despite any age differences.
Thankfully, our worries were all for naught, and we found that all of the people who we met personally and interacted with were very friendly and welcoming right from the very start. When we sat down at the potluck dinner on Thursday evening, we met a great couple, Tony and Lori from Sauble Beach, who sat and chatted with us while we enjoyed the great food that everyone brought to dinner.
And while we’re talking about dinner, the food was really very good all weekend long, and there was plenty of it! Nobody went away from any of the group dinners hungry, that’s for sure.
Our hosts for the weekend, Karen and Bobby-Jo, had planned some great activities for us, and some fun things to see, and were quick-thinking with alternative options when the weather started off somewhat uncooperative. We started off Friday with heavy rain while our group took a boat tour of the Niagara River over a wonderful lunch. Debbie and I had the pleasure of sharing the company of Gail and Martin Aller-Stead while we dined and toured the Niagara River, followed by a trip to Fort George.
With the possibility of still more rain, Karen and Bobby-Jo quickly made an alternative plan for those who wanted to return to camp to dry off, while others could continue on to Fort George and take a walking tour. Wouldn’t you know it, about two minutes after we left the parking lot from the boat tour, the rain stopped, and those of us who went on to Fort George were able to have a great afternoon visit and tour.
Saturday followed with two guest speakers. John from Niagara Trailers talked about RV maintenance and answered everyone’s questions while Brian did a demonstration of his product, Zoom. After lunch there was more fun with a choice of either a craft, which Debbie took part in (and jokingly said she took arts and crafts home from camp to give to her mother), or playing beanbag baseball, bocce ball or ladder golf. Then there was another great dinner and a showcase of some line dancing. After all, the theme of Saturday’s dinner was “A Little Bit of Country” to end the day.
Of course, it wouldn’t be camping without the obligatory campfires and singing, which we enjoyed on both Friday and Saturday evenings.
At the end of the weekend, Debbie and I really enjoyed ourselves, and we felt like we really belonged! We’re looking forward to next year, to meeting more members, and to renewing some of the friendships that we made this year!
We wanted to take this opportunity to thank the many members who volunteered their time, musical talent, dance moves, muscle, products and services to help make this year’s national rally a success:
